Walter Lini, la coutume de Vanuatu et le socialisme mélanésien

Le décès du pasteur anglican Walter Hadye Lini est l'occasion d'une évaluation du rôle politique et idéologique joué par cette figure emblématique de la lutte pour l'indépendance, futur Premier ministre de la toute jeune république " démocratique, socialiste et coutumière de Vanuatu ". Dans un contexte d'édification nationale, l'instrumentalisation de la notion de " kastom " (coutume), hissée au rang de symbole national de ce nouvel État, est examinée en relation avec l'adaptation dogmatique par de nouvelles élites des idéologies de la " Pacific way ", de la " Melanesian way " et du " Socialisme mélanésien ". Le présent article offre également un rappel des péripéties qui ont secoué l'échiquier politique de cet archipel depuis son indépendance en 1980.

The death of the Anglican priest Walter Hadye Lini provides an opportunity to assess this emblematical figure of the independence struggle, who became Prime Minister of the brand new " democratic, socialist and customary republic of Vanuatu ". In this nation-building context, the instrumentalisation of the notion of " kastom ", and its raising to the rank of an official symbol of this new state, is examined in relation to dogmatic adaptations by new elites of various ideologies : " Pacific way ", " Melanesian way " and " Melanesian Socialism ". This article reminds us also about several upheavals on the local political scene since the independence of this archipelago in 1980.
