Recherches archéologiques aux îles Torres,

résumé

     Les îles Torres, situées à l'extrême nord de l'arc insulaire des Nouvelles-Hébrides, à égale distance des îles Santa-Cruz et des îles Banks, n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'une étude archéologique. Les résultats de plusieurs missions réalisées de 1996 à 1998 sont exposés dans ce compte rendu. Ces découvertes monternt que le peuplement ancien des Torres est caractérisé, comme à Tikopia, par une poterie non décorée au bord souvent incisé. La poterie de type Lapita n'a pas été trouvée. Ces informations préliminaires sont placées dans le cadre régional du peuplement initial.

The Torres islands which are located at the far north of the New Hebrides island arc, between the Banks islands and the Santa Cruz, had sofar never been investigated archaeologically. Results obtained during several surveysfrom 1996 ta 1998 are presented. They show that the most ancient occupation ta date is characterised, as in Tikopia, by a plain ware with no tched rims. Lapita pottery has not been found there. These preliminary observations are then discussed in the context Of the initial seulement stratégies of the area.
